How to get cheap flights

Finding a good price on a flight can be the difference between taking that dream trip or leaving it for “later.” Although we now have many tools to search and compare, not all destinations work the same when it comes to finding the perfect ticket. In this guide, we’re sharing practical, effective tips to help you get cheaper flights to places as varied and desirable as Greece, Tunisia, Tenerife, Portugal, or different spots across the Iberian Peninsula. Because yes, each destination has its quirks—and knowing when, how, and where to search can help you save money and time and avoid last-minute surprises.

When to search for flights

The moment you book your flight directly affects the price. There’s no magic formula, but there are patterns that can help you secure better fares.

How far in advance should you book your ticket?

The answer is obvious: as early as possible. Tickets purchased 6 months in advance, for example, are much cheaper than those you might buy two weeks before the trip. However, we know it’s not always possible to plan that far ahead, so for international flights, we recommend buying them 6 to 8 weeks before you travel, especially if you’re flying in peak season. For domestic flights or to Portugal, you can wait a bit longer: between 3 and 5 weeks is usually enough to get good prices, except on highly demanded dates.

What are the best days to search or fly?

In general, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are when airlines release new fares or adjust prices, so you’ll often find better deals. As for flying, it also tends to be cheaper to travel Monday through Thursday than on weekends or holidays.

How to find the best prices

Knowing how to search is just as important as being lucky. Flight comparison tools are very useful, but you need to use them strategically. Here’s how:

Tips for using comparison sites:

Start with broad searches on platforms like Skyscanner, Google Flights, or Kayak. Don’t select fixed dates at first and let the system show you which days are cheaper. Then refine according to your availability. Always check the final price with taxes and baggage included, and don’t forget to turn on price alerts so you receive notifications when the fare drops.

Does searching in incognito mode work?

Although it hasn’t been definitively proven, many people claim that when you search repeatedly for a flight from the same browser, prices may increase. To avoid this, enable incognito mode or clear your cookies. You’ve nothing to lose and you might avoid an unexpected price jump.

Advantages of low-cost airlines:

Carriers such as Ryanair, Vueling, or easyJet can offer very competitive fares, especially on short routes or within Europe. That said, check carefully what’s included in the price: the basic ticket often doesn’t include a carry-on bag, seat selection, or priority boarding, so you’ll need to evaluate whether paying for extras is worth it or if you prefer to travel light.

Small tip: if you’re flying with a low-cost airline, calculate the real cost by adding what you need (bag, seat, boarding) and compare it with the price of a full-service airline. Often, the difference isn’t that big…

Destination-specific tips

It’s advisable to understand each destination’s particularities to optimize your search:

For Greece: the most frequent routes from Spain are to Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos. If you plan to visit islands, consider flying to Athens and then taking a domestic flight or ferry. Prices drop if you book between April and May or after summer.

Santorini, Greece

For Tunisia: there are direct flights from Madrid, Barcelona, or Valencia to Tunis or Monastir. Because frequency is usually lower, it’s wise to book early and be flexible with dates. Sometimes flying with a layover (for example via Rome or Paris) can be cheaper than a direct flight. Discover all our Vincci Hotels in Tunisia here.

For Tenerife: Tenerife has two airports (North and South). Compare prices between both airports and choose the one that best suits your route. To save, search for weekday flights, avoid holidays, and book in advance during peak season. If you’re heading to Tenerife, don’t miss our Vincci Selección La Plantación del Sur 5*.

For Portugal: Lisbon, Porto, and Faro are well connected with Spanish cities. For short getaways, we recommend booking early morning flights to make the most of your day. You can also consider flying into one city and returning from another if you’re touring the country. And to top it all off, there’s no better way to end your days than at one of our hotels in Portugal.

For flights within mainland Spain: if you’re combining several destinations, it can pay off to use the AVE high-speed train or medium-distance trains in combination with flights. Booking in advance and avoiding holidays will help you cut costs.

Tricks to save even more

If you want to squeeze your budget further, these tips can make a real difference.

Be flexible with dates and airports:

The more flexible you are, the easier it will be to find low prices. Shifting by a day or flying from a nearby airport can mean significant savings.

Use miles or loyalty points:

If you travel frequently or have accumulated points in loyalty programs, check whether you can redeem them in full or in part. Some programs let you apply points to reduce the price even if you can’t cover the entire ticket.

Baggage: less is more:

Many low-cost airlines charge for any bag beyond a small personal item. If you can, travel with a carry-on and choose the most economical fare. Pack your essentials smartly and prioritize versatile garments so you don’t overpay.

Vincci Hoteles tip: Packing light not only saves money—it also streamlines transfers. And if you choose to stay with Vincci Hoteles, you’ll have services like luggage storage and laundry so you don’t have to carry everything with you.
