Vincci Bit Fans Tour III: the city of Vasco Mourao

Thursday!  Know what that means?  That we´re continuing  with our virtual tour of our recently launched Barcelona Vincci Bit. As we begin our ascent through the building the next stop is the first floor, where you´ll find the guest´s rooms.  From here on up, the hallway of every floor has been decorated by an artist and each one´s appearance is completely different.

In the case of this one it exhibits the work of the Portuguese ilustrator Mister Mourao also known as Vasco Mourão, and is characterized by detailed drawings of cities and other constructions.

This work was completed on a 100 meter surface and the artist needed 23 days and 122 pencils to do it.  It represents a stretch of detailed buildings that are modulated along the aisle and become more dense or disperse depending on the narrative line of the illustrator.  This means that, as the guest advances along the hallway, he/she can discover the stories that the drawings tell depending on their change of direction.  One thing to keep in mind which is worth stopping to consider, is the number of rooms, which is perfectly woven into the piece.

Regarding the project Mourao commented that “I´m used to working on paper like this so when they told me they had a surface of 100 meters for me to work on I was delighted, and later really scared.  Also, this work didn´t allow for any tricks and I had to draw directly on the wall, without an eraser, without sketches…Really, it scared me a lot.  However, I managed to do it, I put some good music on my Ipod and used all my effort to make it really interesting”.

The illustrator noted, on the other hand, that once he began to work “I became aware that the format was a lot more flexible that the paper I was used to working with, it allowed a more organic flow and the possibility to tell stories in greater detail”. Finally, and after finishing the rest of the work, Mourao was clear that he was interested in taking on more innovative projects like this one and mentioned:  I´m already waiting for my next wall!

Mister Mourao was born in Portugal and currently lives in Barcelona.  He´s an architect who became an illustrator and his work is characterized by a tendency towards obsessive drawings.  Working with only a pencil and paper, he draws cities and other architectural forms.  Among his clients can be found: The New Yorker, Wired US, Condé Nast, Established & Sons, Gestalten, Domus Magazine and Platinum Asser Management.

His work has also appeared in the book Beyond Architecture by Gestalten and in many online publications.  His work is also part of many private art collections and has been exhibited on various occasions in different parts of the world.
