The Carnival of Tenerife, recognized as one of the best in the world, is one of the most spectacular Spanish festivities. Santa Cruz de Tenerife Island becomes full of colour, costumes and music, resulting in a massive celebration, where everybody is welcome.
Thousands of people attend this festivity every year -in 1985, a Guinness World record was achieved for congregating an unprecedented amount of people in an outdoor venue, in attendance to the Cuban singer Celia Cruz concert.
One of the main highlights of the Carnival of Tenerife is the Queen of the Carnival election, an event where each of the 16 candidates show stunning dresses, that can weight up to 80 kilos and have 5 metres in length.

‘The Crown’s Jewell’, ‘Life is a Carnival’, ‘A Thousand Moonlight Nights’, ‘I Give You My Soul’, ‘Powerful Amazon’, ‘The Pink Life Design, ‘Enigma’, ‘Oceanic’ or ‘Santa Cruz’s essence’ are just a few of the spectacular dresses we will be able to watch parading through the island’s streets, until they reach to the location where the gala takes place.
Another highlight you cannot miss is ‘El Entierro de la Sardina’ (‘The Sardine’s Burial’), an irreverent and joyful event, marking the end of the festivities with a huge, purifying bonfire, as an expiation of all the sins and excesses committed during Carnival.
But this year, the Carnival of Tenerife will have a brand new event that will be part of the official program in the years to come: the Carnival Running, a 5 kilometre race where the only requisite to participate is to do so wearing a disguise. It will take place on the 1st of March, at 12.00h, near the Marine Park zone.
The Carnival of Tenerife will start on the 28th of February, ending on the 9th of March, an excellent week for visiting Tenerife in all its splendour.
