Today we want to talk you about one of the landmarks of this genuine street: the Capitol Building.
Do not worry if you do not know where it is. It is very easy, go to Plaza Callao and in the corner between Jacometrezo Street and Gran Vía Street you will find a svelte building easily recognizable due to its neon sign of Schweppes, which lights every Madrilenian night.
History of the building:
The project was designed by architects Luis Martinez Feduchi Ruiz and Vicente Eced y Eced, who choose the art deco style for the building. Construction of the Capitol, also known as Carrión building (surname of its first owner), began in 1931 and ended two years later in 1933.
The initial project encompasses a hotel, a 2000 people cinema, offices, stores and a café. Elevators and air conditioning were some of the innovations in its construction. Precisely, it was the first building of the capital city with air conditioning, and the machinery occupied a whole floor!
At the beginning the idea was to cover its boat-like shape façade with neon signs as in Times Square or in Picadilliy Circus.
