Today, one of the most important cities in the Mediterranean, Barcelona is, the capital of Cataluna. From culture to economy, this city has survived through it all, founded in the roman era you can see what has come before simply by admiring the cities stunning architecture. From gothic, to modern, to vanguard, Barcelona has it all and in abundance to say the least.Amazingly, for a city so close to the coast, Barcelona had never quite made it to the shoreline until recently. So recently in fact, that it took the arrival of the Olympic Game’s in 1992, to really start the expansion of the city to its present day layout.
Nowadays, no visit, holiday, or even life in the city is possible without the constant lapping of the sea. And if you think you can avoid it, then surely now, with the staging of the Cultural Forum down by the port the oceans’ presence cannot be missed by anyone. And having said all this, it’s easy to understand then, that Barcelona is made up of cities within a city, from the Barcelona of the roman times, to the medieval, the modern or to the Barcelona of Gaudi. You get a glimpse of all of this in the gothic quarter, where artistic monuments stand practically side by side, from roman times right up to the 21st century.
