New York

The symbol of American culture, New York is one of the most vibrant cities on the planet.A cultural melting pot in constant motion, this is the economic and political centre of the US.

Siuated on the east coast of the United States in the mouth of the Hudson river. New York is the most populated city in the world with 8 million inhabitants.The city is divided in 5 districts: Manhatten, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx which curiously is the only one which sits on the mainland.

MANHATTAN. This is the epicentre of the city and the main tourist attraction.Its divided into 3 different areas known as:
  • Downtown. This area runs from the south of the island right up to 14th street. Here you’ll find the cities financial district living side by side with the cities oldest neighborhoods. Some fantastic shopping areas can be found here such as Greenwich village, tribeca, Soho and Little Italy and who could miss a visit to the cities impressive Chinatown.
  • Midtown. Is home to some of the most famous landmarks that line the cities impressive skyline. Running from 14th to 59th street here you’ll find the Empire State building, the Rockefeller Centre,the United Nations building,Broadway theatrical centre of the west and of course Times Square.
  • Uptown. An area of contrast running from Harlem to the “museum mile” home to some emblematic institutions such as the Metrpolitan Museum of Arts, the Guggenheim and the Whitney Museum.

BROOKLYN. Home to the Brooklyn Mueum of Art which holds one of the most treasured collection of Egyptian artefacts in the world. In this area, the most populated of the city you will find the Coney Island, another symbol of New York the Coney Island bridge built in 1833 takes you to the island and cities only theme park.

QUEENS. This is the cities residential area, a typical city suburb with it’s expected array of typical American family homes. Right next door is the well known Bronx neighborhood which over the years has become maybe a little less famous with its parks and sprawling residential areas.

STATEN ISLAND.This relaxed quiet neighborhood can be visited by using the free ferry service. From this spot in the city you get magnificent views of the Staue of Liberty and Manhattans impressive skyline.

MOMA
A must see attraction if being one of the most famous museums in the world wasn’t enough,MOMA is home to hundreds of activities, expositions, presentations and even parties, this culturall beehive has something for everyone.

Solomon Guggenheim
With five different private collections on display, with artwork including paintings and sculptures from the 14th century to more contemporary works from todays artists. The museum itself, the work of Frank Lloyd Wright alike its sister in Bilboa, Spain can be classed a piece of art in its own right.An architectural masterpiece.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Founded in 1870, the “Met” is one of the biggest museums in the world. 5 million visitors a year get the opportunity to witness the mre than 2 million pieces on display, a 5000 year collection which spans the history of humanity itself right back from prehistoric times up till today.

  • Opening hours: Tusday to Thursday 09.30 to 17.30.Fridays and Saturdays,09.30 to 21.00,Sunday 09.30 to 17.30 and Monday closed.

Central Park
Constructed in the 19th century due the lack of any kind of green landscape, Central Park is the life that breathes air to the city.Covering 341 hectares, ranging from 59th 110th street.A walk in he park is an experience in itself with open air theatre and shows, you can take one of its 93 km of walks or stroll along its many lakes, just be careful to remember to take a map with you as it’s easy to get lost.


Empire State Building
Possibly the most famous and certainly the most photographed building of the city.It has been a symbol of New York since it’s construction in 1933 and for more than 40 years was the tallest building in the world.Today you can visit the 86th and 102nd floors to enjoy the most spectacular views of the city.If you are a fan of the movies it’s recommended that you visit marble lobby with it’s art deco styling.


Statue of Liberty
A gift from France in appreciation of there help in the war of Independence it’s the symbol of freedom. You can visit the viewing room in the crown sitting on Liberty’s head. With 25 windows representing the precious stones of that number that can be found on earth this is a visit that cannot be miised whilst in the city.

  • Address:Port of New York.Catch the ferry from the Castle Clinton National monument in south Manhattan.
  • Opening Hours:0900 til 1700 everyday.
  • Admission fee: Entry free, ferry trip costs 12$ adults, senior citizens 10$ and children 5$

Rockefeller Centre.
The biggest shopping and leisure complex in the country. The rockefeller family constructed this centre between 5th and 6th avenue 48th and 51st street. You can get to the centre by the cities underground network and move from each of its 19 different buildings by way of the subterranean tunnels.With everything from shops to theatres the Rockefeller has something for everyone and depending on the time of year you can either check out the views from the General Electric building or skate on the ice rink.

Broadway
Home of theatrical arts in the city with 38 theatres surrounding Times Square offering up the most spectacular shows to be found anywhere on earth. Ticket fees range from anywhere between 50 to 100 dollars depending on the show.

Bronx Zoo
Situated at the south end of the Bronk Park on the banks of the Bronw river you’ll find one of the best zoos in the world.Covering more than a hundred hectares and with almost 700 different species the zoo offers the chance to witness some of the worlds most endangered animals. You can also take a ride on the zoos cqable car.

Coney Island theme park.
In Brooklyn, close to the brighton beach you’ll find coneys islands theme park with some of the original wooden rollercoasters still in use. During your visit you can try one of Nathans world famous hotdogs to this day still using the traditional recipe from the turn of the 20th century.
