Guggenheim Museum, Castro Urdiales, Laredo and Santoña
Visitors can make a day trip to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim Museum and its spectacular works housed in a fantastic stone and titanium structure in the shape of a boat, designed by the architect Frank Gehry.
On the way back to Cantabria, it is worthwhile stopping off at Castro Urdiales, a charming seaside fishing village with an outstanding tradition and select tourism.
In Santoña, a picturesque seaside village, visitors can admire the spectacular salt marshes and its lovely seaside atmosphere, without forgetting the famous "anchovies" tapas.
Laredo is one of the most important tourist destinations in Cantabria.
If you cross the West coast, following the road along the banks of the river Deva, through the Desfiladero de la Hermida ravine (picturesque landscape surrounded by mountains), you arrive at Potes (economic centre of Liébana). Continue the tour in Fuente Dé, which is in the heart of the Picos de Europa. And from there, jump into the modern cable car that will take you high into the mountains.
After lunch in Liébana, you can visit the Santo Toribio de Liébana Monastery, refuge of Saint Beato, where you will find the largest piece of Christ’s Cross in the world.

This is one of the most important nature parks in Europe. Located 17 Km from Santander, in the county of Villaescusa, it was built over an old iron mine and in the area of a spectacular karst geological formation. The park is very large and may also be visited by car. Animals are kept on a semi-free basis, including those endangered species that make Cabárceno internationally recognised.
Santander: The Bay, the Cantabrian Maritime Museum, the Magdalena Peninsula. Santander Bay is included among the “Most Beautiful Bays in the World". From the docks on Paseo de Castelar, you may discern the villages of Somo and Pedreña. Take a boat trip out to "Pedreñeras", as boats cross the bay every half-hour from Palacete del Embarcadero.
The Cantabrian Maritime Musuem, just a few metres from the Vincci Puertochico Hotel, is also a must. To finish the day, the Magdalena palace is located on the Magdalena peninsula, one of the most beautiful areas of the city, where the Menéndez Pelayo International University summer courses are held.
There is also an open park with a mini-zoo that can be visited onboard the tourist train known as “Magdaleno”. Magdalena Peninsula opening 8.00 to 22.00 (from June to September) and 8.00 to 20.30 (rest of the year)
Considered to be the most important cave with Rupestrian art from the Upper Palaeolithic Era, it is totally closed for research purposes.

This museum has become the most important pre-historic research centre in Europe. The heart of the project is the “Neocave”, a recreation of Altamira Cave as it was 15,000 years ago. This reproduction is true to the original down to the smallest detail, with all its cracks and textures. The paintings have been exactly reproduced, using the original procedures and natural colourings.
The museum also houses part of its permanent exhibition more than 400 original objects that make up the best collection about the Palaeolithic in the Iberian Peninsula.

San Vincente de la Barquera, Santillana, Comillas and the Altamira Museum
The west coast of Cantabria offers three beautiful unique towns; San Vicente de la Barquera, a town that is strongly related to the sea, you can sense the seaside atmosphere in every corner.Comillas combines landscape and important Modernist buildings. Santillana del Mar is a must for art lovers. Cobbled streets, big houses and palaces with noble families´ codes of arms showing on the façades....
To finish off, the Colegiata de Sta. Juliana, which dates from the 12th century, a Romanic art jewel in the region, particularly its cloister of historic column capitols.

Over 60,000 square metres, this zoo houses about two thousand animals from the five continents. Many of these are the result of the success of the 20 captivity breeding programmes for endangered species. Snow panthers, Asian lions, orang-utans or Sumatra tigers are some of the animals that the zoo keeps. The “Butterfly Jungle” is definitely a must in this zoo.
Picos de Europa Mountains
This is the most important mountain formation in the Cantabrian Range. A landscape of deep ravines, steep slopes, deep valleys, differences in level and high peaks that often exceed 2.500 metres. They are home to a considerable number of animal species, for example, the Royal Eagle.

In the heart of the Picos de Europa mountains, it covers a difference in level of 750 metres, bringing the visitor to an altitude of 1,850 metres in under 4 minutes. From the top station, with a Restaurant, shop and Panoramic Viewpoint, great views over an immensely beautiful landscape can be admired.
