Platea, drinks in the heart of the Salamanca district

Museo Chicote, a slice of history in the heart of Gran Vía

For more than 80 years people watchers have been gazing out of the windows of number 12, Gran Vía. It was 1931 when Perico Chicote decided to open his now legendary bar. All manner of famous people have passed through its doors, from Ava Gardner to Grace Kelly.

Lose yourself in the history of the place and of the Spanish capital and try the ‘Chicote’ cocktail, a mix of Gin, Vermouth and Grand Marnier.

And after a drink in such an iconic place, why not stay in somewhere equally emblematic, in the building whose the façade hosts the famous neon Schweppes advert. A bird’s eye view from the rooftop of the Palacio de Cibeles

In Madrid’s City Hall you’ll find one of the most exquisite rooftop terraces. Just open your eyes and gaze out… the Goddess Cibeles, the Puerta de Alcalá… a scene just made for your camera. The green neon lights soften the atmosphere, creating a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a summer evening drink.

In the Barrio de las Letras (Neighbourhood of Letters), on the Paseo del Prado, is our hotel Vincci Soho 4*, guarded by a friendly gecko on its façade, created for the Art Fair ‘Decoracción’. A drink at Madrid Río

The Madrid Río Park hosts the last of this post’s recommended outdoor terraces. The recently built bar is called Café del Río. In addition to offering you an extensive food menu you can enjoy a mojito, a daiquiri or whatever takes your fancy, as you take in the view over the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace. It’s magical chill-out in summer, right by the river, where you can enjoy a couple of drinks listening to live music.
